Jollibee Group’s Green Efforts Progresses with Sustained Environmental Programs
MANILA, Philippines. 11 June 2024 – Amid the various threats to the ecosystem and natural resources, the Jollibee Group continues to engage and expand its environmental protection efforts to further its commitment to its sustainability agenda.
To join the movement that hopes to inspire millions of people worldwide to take on environmental action and positive changes, the Jollibee Group participates in the World Environment Day as it aligns with the Planet pillar of the Joy for Tomorrow global sustainability agenda, which aims to treat the planet responsibly.
Solar-Powered Manufacturing Sites
Among the recent initiatives of the Jollibee Group to highlight its commitment to integrating green energy is the installation of solar panels in its four main manufacturing sites in Luzon.
The Company has raised the total solar energy produced by the entire supply chain to 9.1 megawatts. After mounting 16,800 solar panels, the four sites’ power consumption from the grid is expected to reduce a combined average of approximately 15 percent a year.
The Jollibee Group has accelerated its incorporation of renewable energy in its manufacturing sites. The Jollibee Worldwide Services Logistics (JWS-L) in Parañaque City and C3 Commissary in Laguna were the most recent sites integrating clean energy. This initiative started with the Zen3 Commissary on November 30, 2023, followed by the Canlubang Baking Facility on January 9, 2024.
“These initiatives symbolize innovation and represent a shared commitment to preserving the planet through intentional and sustainable business practices,” said Jollibee Group Chief Business Officer Joseph Tanbuntiong.
Michael Ong, Vice President & Head of Supply Chain Management Philippines, supported, “We will continue to develop strategies and systems that will enable us to transform our supply chain operations and treat the planet more responsibly.”
Mangrove Reforestation Project
As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, the Jollibee Group has engaged its employees to support mangrove preservation and reforestation projects.
On May 9, 2024, the company, through its social development arm Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF) and several employee volunteers completed the first leg for the year of its Mangrove Tree Planting activity at the Bued Mangrove Ecopark in Alaminos, Pangasinan.
Over 1,500 Mangrove propagules were planted in the area with the help of 105 employee volunteers from the Jollibee North Luzon District 1 and 52 individuals from JGF’s local implementing partners.
The tree-planting activity forms part of a series of reforestation projects which seek to help restore the country’s mangrove ecosystem and build a more resilient future for Filipinos living in coastal communities. To make it happen, JGF also collaborated with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the local government of the City of Alaminos Pangasinan to ensure mangrove survival and propagation. Last year, close to 4,000 mangrove trees were planted by Jollibee Group employees: 2,250 mangrove propagules along the coastlines of Alaminos, Pangasinan, and Carmen, Cebu; and 1,700 seedlings in Lemery, Batangas.
“We are committed to stepping up our efforts in creating value for our stakeholders and in giving back to the environment,” said JGF’s President Gisela Tiongson. “To further increase the area of mangrove habitat in the country, JGF is also planning to support more mangrove planting activities in other regions, including Visayas and Mindanao, upholding community management as key component.”
Mangroves are essential for protecting coastal areas by reducing erosion and absorbing storm surges during hurricanes. They also support the ecosystem by binding and building soils with their dense roots, providing a habitat for various species.
Committed to its global sustainability agenda targets, the Jollibee Group will continue to enhance its sustainable business practices, embrace new technologies, and harness the power of employee volunteerism to inspire more of its partners and stakeholders to become responsible stewards of the planet.
