Jollibee Group Reinforces Environmental Sustainability Across its Supply Chain
MANILA, Philippines. June 26, 2023 – The Jollibee Group has beefed up environmental protection and preservation efforts across its supply chain to build a more sustainable business. These measures are consistent with its global sustainability agenda dubbed Joy for Tomorrow that aims to treat the planet more responsibly and help build a sustainable future for people and communities.
The planet pillar of the Jollibee Group’s agenda is focused on improving packaging sustainability improving packaging sustainability across its operations, reducing food loss and waste in both its manufacturing process and store operations, reducing energy and water consumption in the manufacturing process, and executing energy-saving initiatives to reduce energy consumption across its stores.
“For 45 years, we at the Jollibee Group have dedicated ourselves to excellence and innovation. We are taking this commitment a step further by making more deliberate efforts to become a more sustainable business,” said Jollibee Group Chief Sustainability Officer and Public Affairs Officer Pepot Miñana. “Our environmental sustainability efforts are part of our commitment to future generations to preserve and improve natural resources from which they can benefit.”
Environmental sustainability gains
In 2022, the Jollibee Group manufacturing sites in the Philippines achieved 38% reduction in food loss and waste versus a 2020 baseline, with over 50% of its organic waste now going to bioremediation process. The company’s efforts helped reduce food loss and waste by 5,566 metric tons, driven by initiatives such as container upsizing, shift to reusable palette wrapping, and recovery and recycling measures through third-party collectors, among many others.
In terms of energy efficiency, the company delivered 21.5% reduction in energy use ratio versus a 2020 baseline, where a total of 5,589 metric tons of greenhouse gases has been avoided for release. This gain was due to measures such as equipment optimization, preventive maintenance, and installation of new equipment to reduce electricity and fuel consumption.
The Jollibee Group has also started to use solar panels in selected stores in the Philippines. At the store level, each solar panel installed reduces about 3-7% of consumption from the grid.
“We continue to explore and evaluate new technologies that reduce consumption and optimize the energy efficiency programs to be implemented across our business units,” Miñana said.
Fostering employee and community engagement
Nurturing a behavior of shared responsibility for the environment is also a part of the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Just recently, nearly 4,000 Jollibee Group stores and facilities across the Philippines, North America, China, and Europe, Middle East, and Asia (EMEAA) participated in the Earth Hour.
Jollibee, Chowking, Greenwich, Mang Inasal, Red Ribbon, Burger King Panda Express, and Yoshinoya branches in the Philippines simultaneously turned off their non-essential lights, signages, and billboards from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. last March 25, 2023 in support of the global environmental movement.
The company’s commissaries and offices across the globe, including international brands Smashburger; Yonghe King, Hong Zhuang Yuan, and Tim Ho Wan restaurants in China; and international branches of Jollibee, Chowking, and Red Ribbon also turned their lights off during Earth Hour in their respective time zones.
The company, through its social development arm Jollibee Group Foundation (JGF), also initiated Mangrove Reforestation activities in Pangasinan and Cebu. Employee volunteers from Jollibee, Jollibee Worldwide Services Logistics, Red Ribbon Bakeshop, and Zenith Foods Corporation, recently planted 2,250 mangrove propagules in Alaminos, Pangasinan and Carmen, Cebu.
Mangroves protect coastal areas from storm surges, serve as habitat for fish, thereby help the livelihood of surrounding communities. They also have the capacity to absorb up to three to five times the amount of carbon into the soil compared to other forest types.
“We hope that through these environmental sustainability efforts, we can inspire our business units, partners, and customers around the world to embrace the greater responsibility we all share for our planet and our communities,” Miñana said.
